2nd Annual Logging
locomotive Meet The logging locomotives --- Shay, Climax, Heisler, Clishay are very slow. It's great to devote a weekend to these snails. We just measured the MCC track and found the Southern Division loop to be 9.7 scale miles (1.2 actual miles) and the Mountain Division loop to be 7.8 scale miles (1.0 actual miles). The typical logging locomotive ran at 10 mph or less so at scale speed it takes about two hours to loop both divisions ----- not counting time for repairs. There are several long grades on the Mountain Division typical of logging railroads. These little locomotives can pull amazing loads over short steep grades but the long grades take a toll on their ability to keep steam pressure. The run back down is also a struggle --- to keep the speed down to a safe level. Click on thumbnail to view full size photo. Use browser back button to return to this page.
